2017 Acura MDX Loses Its Beak and Gains Sport Hybrid Power

Acura fans will be excited to learn that brand is already rolling out the sleek styling that recently shown on the Acura Precision Concept. At this week’s New York Auto Show, Acura showed the first production model to receive this new design language, the 2017 MDX.

The MDX is Acura’s best-selling model so it’s a natural fit to receive the freshened look, which combines cues from the aforementioned Acura Precision Concept as well as the all-new NSX supercar.

In addition to sharper styling, which is most notable in the completely reimagined front and rear fascias, the updated MDX also boasts a new Sport Hybrid model. This model pairs a 3.0-liter V6 with hybrid assist system. It also boasts a seven-speed automatic at the front and two electric motors at the rear axle. This NSX-inspired powertrain yields a total of 325 horsepower (35 more than the non-hybrid) and can attain 25 miles per gallon city, 26 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined. This model, when equipped with either the optional Technology or Advance packages, also receives an Active Sport Suspension with Comfort, Normal, Sport, and Sport+ modes.

In addition to an all-new powertrain option, the 2017 MDX gets more standard equipment including a suite of active safety systems that combines Collision Mitigation Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Road Departure Mitigation. Other standard features include an electric parking brake and auto high beams.

For the first time, buyers of the new MDX can also opt for captain’s chairs in lieu of the second row bench seat. This configuration also boasts a center console with extra USB ports.

The Acura MDX is the best-selling three row SUV on the market, and for good reason. It’s always offered value, luxury, and good looks. While not a complete redesign, the updates given to the 2017 MDX bring a more athletic look, especially with its revised LED headlights and the integrated dual exhausts out back. Additionally, with all-new powertrain and interior layout options, buyers in this coveted category will have no choice but to consider what the MDX has to offer.
