Mercedes has a hit on its hands with its new GLC crossover SUV. And even though it’s just a year old, the GLC is already growing more offshoots, and adding the vaunted AMG badge.
At the New York auto show, audiences got a first look at the GLC43 and the new GLC Coupe.
The GLC Coupe isn’t a two-door. In the German way of thinking, it’s the sleeker-bodied version of the GLC, the X4 to its X3.
As with those BMW utility vehicles, the GLC Coupe trims some of its rear-seat head room and cargo space for a more handsome profile.
On sale next year as a 2017 model, the new SUV will come in base form as the GLC300 Coupe. It’s powered by a 2.0-liter turbo inline-4 with 241 horsepower. It’s coupled to a 9-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive.
Among its laundry list of features, the Coupe has selectable driving modes, a power tailgate, and a sunroof standard. Options include an air suspension, adaptive cruise control, and an infotainment system.
Both the GLC Coupe and the standard model earn the AMG badge next year, too. As the GLC43, they’re fitted with a twin-turbocharged V-6 that pumps out 362 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. A 9-speed automatic sends power to all four wheels with a fixed 31/69 torque split and a Sport+ driving mode.
The standard air suspension gets three settings, and the GLC43’s selectable modes let drivers set up a personal profile for engine, transmission, suspension, and steering feel.
Mercedes says the GLC43 AMG models will run and gun to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, and will reach a top speed of 155 mph.
The AMG twins will be easy to spot. Compared to the standard versions, the GLC43s get deeper front and rear bumpers, a diamond-pattern grille, and 20-inch, 5-spoke wheels.
Inside, the GLC43 adds AMG-style instruments, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, and sport seats with red stitching.
There’s no word on pricing yet for any of the new models, but the GLC43 and Coupe go on sale for the 2017 model year.
