In what might be the best example of one British icon paying homage to another, Aston Martin Cambridge commissioned V8 Vantage S Blades edition, in deference to the aviation display team The Blades.
The Blades fly Extra EA-300’s, which are high performance aircrafts designed for the extraordinary aerobatic feats the team often perform. It is from these planes that Aston Martin derived their designed cues and inspiration for the modification of the V8 Vantage S that we have all come to know and love.
There are 5 members of The Blades team and five planes, therefore 5 Blades edition models. Each car will be marked with the name of the pilot and serial number of the plane that it is modeled after. It will also bear The Blades badge reminding all of its august origin.
The Vantage S Blades Edition carries a 430-hp and 361 pound-feet of torque naturally aspirated 4.7 liter V8 that gives this car the capabilities of a 0 to 60-mph sprint in 4.8 seconds.
The silver finish of the vehicles contrasts appropriately with the black accents of the wheels, fender vents and headlights. The grille is painted black but highlighted by orange accents which complement the orange brake calipers. The accessory embellishments seep into the car resulting in a majority black interior with orange stitching and piping and The Blades logo emblazoned on the headrests.
The cars sold for £119, 950 which is more than $170,000. There is also an optional $7,000 Sportshift II seven-speed paddle shift transmission. The lucky owners got the opportunity to pick up their new cars at the Sywell Autodrome in Northamptonshire. Their VIP day with The Blades included testing their new cars on the runway with a professional driver in tow, an in-flight experience with The Blades members and a special performance by them.
