Chevrolet goes premium with 2017 Cruze Hatchback priced from $22,190

Chevrolet said that its new-for-2017 Cruze Hatchback will boast a surprisingly hefty sticker price when it goes on sale late this year: $22,190. That’s several hundred dollars over the four-door version of the compact sedan (with RS package) and well over that of most direct rivals.

However, the Cruze Hatchback will be available in just two trim levels—LT and Premium—which helps explain why it stickers for over $2,000 above rivals like the Ford Focus and Mazda 3.

Chevrolet is forgoing an L or LS version of the Hatchback like it offers in the sedan, instead focusing on its two higher trim levels. LT models include items like standard OnStar with a 4G LTE antenna, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, alloy wheels, and the RS styling package and are available with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic. The Premier, meanwhile, ups the ante with leather seats, a heated steering wheel, larger 17-inch alloy wheels, and a host of optional tech and safety features.

That figure includes a mandatory $875 destination charge, but doesn’t account for any optional equipment.

Interestingly, this latest Cruze isn’t the model’s first foray into the five-door world. The outgoing model was offered only as a sedan in the United States, but was sold as a five-door version globally.
